What is the weather like in Mexico City?
Mexico City is located at 7,350 feet (2,240 m) - higher than Denver, CO. Days are usually warm, with temperatures ranging from high 60s to mid-70s °F (20-24°C), while nights can be cooler, dropping into the 50s °F (10-15°C).
What should I pack?
We highly suggest a light jacket for the evenings. During the day most people will feel comfortable in casual attire (t-shirt and pants). Men traditionally wear long pants - shorts are typically only worn by tourists. Event attire ranges from semi-formal (welcome dinner) to formal (black-tie wedding reception). Bright colors are encouraged, but not mandatory. Ladies, please refrain from wearing any white, ivory, or champagne tones.
How do I get around in Mexico City?
Public transit ok? Nope! We advise against taking public transit due to safety concerns. How do I get around? Uber is an easy, cheap, and convenient option. What about a cab? We recommend ONLY taking cabs if they are ordered directly from a hotel. Please note that from the airport it is safe to grab a taxi, however, please make sure you order your cab from a licensed kiosk stand.
What is Mexico's currency?
Mexico uses the Peso, which can be exchanged at the airport upon arrival or prior to arrival at your local bank or a currency exchange. You should carry some cash for eating at the local markets, buying a water from a street vendor, or purchasing crafts at the artisanal markets. Most sit-down restaurants accept credit card.
What is the tipping culture in Mexico?
Tipping in Mexico is important and expected. For dining, 15% of the bill should be added for "a good" service, and 20% for an "excellent" service, similar to the United States. Tips can be paid in cash or added to your credit card but you MUST tell the waiter what percent to add before charging your card. Simply say "más el quince porfavor" to add 15%, or "más el veinte" to add 20%.
How accessible is internet in Mexico?
You can find free Wifi throughout the city, in hotels, and at most restaurants. With Wifi you can send texts through iMessage or Whatsapp, however, we highly recommend you either a) purchase a tourist SIM card upon arrival (at the airport, 7-Eleven, or OXXO), or b) enable your domestic plan for global or North America roaming. Cell connectivity is essential for ordering Uber - your main mode of transportation between venues.
Is Mexico City safe?
Mexico City in general is very safe - especially the neighborhoods of Condesa, Roma, and Polanco. However, like any big city, you should be aware of your surroundings and don't venture into areas which don't "feel safe". Do NOT bring or wear expensive jewelry or watches, and be mindful of your mobile phone - do not leave it laying on the table during a meal, for example.
